BLI thought leader Karl Ahlrichs takes on the Donner Party in TWC documentary

If you’re into business education and cannibalism, you’re in luck.

The Weather Channel is airing a two-hour documentary this month called “Dead of Winter,” about the fateful Donner Party expedition of 1846-47. You’re undoubtedly aware that some members of the Donner Party resorted to cannibalism to survive while snowbound in the Sierra Nevada mountains that winter.

Less well known is the fact that resident Business Learning Institute instructor Karl Ahlrichs is the great-great-great-great-great grandson of George Donner, the leader of the ill-fated expedition. In fact, Ahlrichs was interviewed at length for the documentary and appears on screen during the production.

“About a year ago I was contacted by some Hollywood producers about helping them gather materials for the project,” Ahlrichs told us via e-mail. “Then, they wanted to Skype me. Then, they mailed me a plane ticket and flew me to (Los Angeles) to film me.”

The documentary will air next from 8-10 p.m. ET on Thursday, Dec. 3, on The Weather Channel. Keep an eye on The Weather Channel’s broadcast schedule for future broadcasts.
