Finding New Unity in Diversity: Grief, Trauma + Emotional Safety

In the last two years at work, we have seen massive shifts in the workplace, demographically and interpersonally. These changes are on a rapid curve for change between 2020 and 2025. CPAs and their clients can immediately use this framework to expand understanding between people coming from different perspectives and experiences. One of the quietest and the most destructive trends at work is the long-term grief being felt by so many. It is compounded by the ongoing struggles of daily life. When people don’t feel seen and heard by those they work with, their safety begins to dwindle and they disconnect. This learning can be used to increase resilience and aptitude for change, grow engagement at work, and allow for better relationships between people who work together. This live, expert-led class helps CPAs to become better leaders, managers, and allies for today’s workplace.

This course utilizes the work and research of Robert Kegan, Bob Anderson, Peter Levine, Stephen Porges, Dan Siegel, David Treleaven, Pamela Fuller, Bari Williams, and many other organizational strategists and psychologists. Begin to practice reflection and observation that leads to being able to identify your own emotional struggles and grief, as well as those of others, and to work together to strengthen support in your workplace.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Define types of grief and trauma as well as the sources of these
  • Clarify how grief and trauma can deeply impact a person’s sense of emotional safety
  • Understand the importance of being an ally in grief, and how this behavior affects diversity, inclusion and equity in the workplace
  • Clarify the ways that these factors affect different people at work
  • Do grief and emotional safety assessment of self and team, and adopt a daily practice of checking in on these elements
  • Feel confident about the ability to design a plan for more change and positive shifts in engagement and performance based on increased safety
