Emotional Intelligence Essentials

Life is a journey, not a destination. Today is the day you receive your compass.

People at work who are solid in their emotional intelligence have a significantly higher capacity for innovation, advanced leadership, presence, authenticity, and mentoring and developing teams. In this course, we work on core principles of motivation and behavior, focusing on what motivates you, and following with how that core motivation affects your behavior.

This skill is a deeply needed change which is on a rapidly increasing curve between now and 2025. CPAs and their clients can immediately use this framework to expand understanding of self, understanding of others, and understanding of the motivations, values, behaviors and boundaries of people from different perspectives and life experiences. This learning can be used to increase capacity to deal with change, grow engagement, increase talent retention, and allow for better relationships and deepen trust between people who work together. It may also serve to lessen conflict, reduce absenteeism, create a positive container for feedback, and even out stress around complex decision-making.

When I coach individuals, I offer weekly, bi-monthly or monthly 1-hour sessions virtually on the platform of the coachees choice and either by video or voice. All sessions are completely confidential and serve to assist the client in moving from having new information to application of sustainable and transformational results. Clients co-create a leadership development plan with me with measurable outcomes to support the business, and progress check-ins with a boss or supervisor toward these business outcomes are typically standard.

This coaching utilizes the work and research of Dirk Cloete, Claudio Naranjo, Don Riso, Russ Hudson, Beatrice Chestnut, Uranio Paes, Wendy Appel and Bob Anderson, Bill Adams, Abraham Maslow, William Moulton Marston, and Richard Barrett.

This course is offered for 6-12 credit hours.


Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Clearly understand the basics of emotional intelligence and how it relates to core motivation
  • Understand their own motivation, what drives it and what prevents it
  • Feel clear about their values as well as their blind spots
  • Clarify where their motivation crosses with the motivations of another and what can happen in both the clash and the collaboration
  • Use this new information in real-time for: conflict management, building trust, change management, strategy development, leadership development, and mentoring/ developing staff.
