The Business Learning Institute was founded in 1999 by the Maryland Association of CPAs and became part of the Association of International Certified Public Accountants in 2021. Our launch team researched the competencies needed for the future of business and the CPA profession, looking out to 2025 in 1999 and again in 2011.

Our main finding: To be successful in a rapidly changing and complex world, a professional’s rate of learning must be faster than the business environment’s rate of change and faster than their competition (L>C2).

Each of us must not only rapidly learn technical skills, but we also must grow our leadership and strategy skills. These high-level competencies propel individual careers and help organizations thrive over the long-term.

Executive Vice President, Business Growth and Engagement, Association of International Certified Professional Accountants

Tom Hood, CPA, CITP, CGMA is the EVP Business Engagement & Growth for AICPA-CIMA and the Business Learning Institute.

Tom recently stepped onto the global stage of the largest association of certified professional accountants in the world, representing over 690,000 CPAs, CGMAs, and students. In 2021 he was named the second most influential person in accounting by Accounting Today Magazine for the tenth year.

Tom is known for his work on the CPA Vision Project, the CPA Horizons 2025 Project, and most recently the Future of Finance 2030. In 1999, he co-founded the Business Learning Institute (BLI) with a purpose of “Empowering human capital in a global VUCA world, so that our organizations and communities thrive”, based on the findings of the CPA Vision and CPA Horizons 2025 research. This led to the T-shaped Professional and a focus on ‘success skills’ for CPAs, CGMAs, and finance and accounting professionals.

LinkedIn recruited Tom as one of their Top 100 Influencers in 2012 and he now has a following of over 730,000. He is a member of Forbes Finance Council and was inducted into the Accounting Hall of Fame.

Tom is the former CEO of the Maryland Association of CPAs and former CFO of a highway construction company. He has a Master’s in Finance from Johns Hopkins University and a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Loyola University of Maryland.

He lives in Baltimore with his wife Sharon.

Greg Rittler,

Chief Operating Officer

Greg is the operational force that brings BLI’s strategic goals to fruition. As COO, he works directly with Tom Hood and the BLI sales team to implement the organization’s vision and ensure its operations are user-friendly, scalable, and conducive to delivering relevant content. Greg also oversees the technology and marketing operations that enable BLI to create and deliver innovative content to more professionals.

Greg also serves as CEO of Blue Ocean Ideas, a brand management agency based in Baltimore, MD that helps organizations with strategic marketing execution and technology transformation.

Pam Devine,

Director, Client & Partner Services - U.S. & Global Markets

Pam brings customer-centric solutions and strategies to all of BLI’s customers. As Director of Client & Partner Services, Pam is the go-to source for information on anything and everything related to BLI’s content. Her knowledge of BLI products comes from years of working directly with clients to help them design the best curriculum for their needs. Pam’s expertise means she can deliver fast, customized solutions in any situation, and she works closely with the BLI leadership team to identify new opportunities to serve clients. Pam also brings more than a decade of experience working with the Maryland Association of CPAs to make its members more future-ready.
